Do I need to purchase Vignette?

In Slovenia, there is a vignette system for passenger vehicles on motorways and some expressways. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Who Needs a Vignette?

  • Vignette required for all passenger vehicles and light vehicles using motorways (avtoceste) and certain expressways (hitre ceste) in Slovenia.
  • Larger vehicles (trucks, buses) are subject to a different toll system based on distance traveled.

2. Where to Buy a Vignette

  • Online: You can purchase the vignette online through the official Slovenian road authority website.
  • Gas Stations: Vignettes are available at most gas stations across Slovenia, including near border crossings.
  • At Border Crossings: If entering Slovenia by car, you can buy a vignette at the border.

3. Vignette Prices

  • Passenger Cars: Prices depend on the duration of the vignette:
    • 7-day vignette: Approximately €15.
    • Monthly vignette: Around €30.
    • Annual vignette: Around €110.
  • Larger Vehicles: Trucks, buses, and vehicles with more than 3.5 tons pay tolls based on the distance they travel using the DarsGo system.

4. Where to Use the Vignette

  • The vignette is required for all vehicles using motorways (avtoceste) and some major expressways (hitre ceste).
  • You do not need a vignette for local roads, small roads, or rural areas.

5. Enforcement of the Vignette

  • Roadside Checks: Police and road inspectors regularly check vehicles for valid vignettes. If you are found driving without a valid vignette, you will face a fine.
    • The fine for driving without a valid vignette can range from €300 to €800.

6. Penalties for Non-Compliance

  • Non-Payment of Vignette: If you’re caught without a vignette, you can face a fine of €300 to €800.
  • Toll System Violations for Larger Vehicles: Trucks and other heavy vehicles that fail to pay tolls could face higher penalties under the DarsGo system.

7. Additional Information

  • Environmental Zones: Slovenia does not currently have low-emission zones (LEZs), but larger cities, including Ljubljana, have discussed implementing such restrictions in the future.
  • Toll-Free Roads: Smaller roads and local routes are generally toll-free, so if you want to avoid the vignette system, you can use alternative routes.

8. Tips for Travelers

  • Get Your Vignette Before Entering Slovenia: Make sure to buy the vignette either online or at the border or gas stations before driving on motorways.
  • Ensure Validity: Ensure your vignette is valid for the duration of your stay in Slovenia.
  • Alternative Routes: If you want to avoid vignettes, you can use local roads, but they may take longer to reach your destination.
